Discovering Lorina Bulwer’s workhouse embroideries

lorina_bulwer_needlework_03The next event organised as part of the Shoddy project is a discussion/workshop that is part of the Love Arts Festival, celebrating creativity and mental health.

The workshop, on 20th October, is a chance to think about creativity – particularly needlework – as a form of protest and an outlet for strong emotions. We’ll be learning about Lorina Bulwer’s embroidered scrolls, made while she was incarcerated in Great Yarmouth workhouse at the end of the 19th century, from a curator at Thackray Medical Museum, where one of the scrolls is kept (in storage – too delicate to be brought out, unfortunately).

Booking is essential as places are limited.
